For over 15 years, Inclusion Winnipeg (formerly known as Community Living Winnipeg) was in partnership with professional instructors offering arts programming to young adults of ALL abilities ~ musical theatre, improv, drama, dance, art and yoga. Arts programming thus became accessible to young adults with intellectual disabilities.
In 2019, Inclusion Winnipeg partnered with Crescent Fort Rouge United Church (CFRUC) to present its latest (pre-COVID) fall Arts Festival. This followed the Inclusion Players (drama) winning the Winnipeg Social Innovation First prize cash award sponsored by The United Church of Canada.
CFRUC is a recognized community hub – a hub for the arts and children and seniors’ programs and of course spirituality. The socio-economic value of its community work was captured in a recent cross-Canada HALO Report and is said to be $3.4M annually. On average (pre-COVID) CFRUC has 11,000 people through its building annually for events with 110+ organizations. Under strict health regulations, CFRUC still served 2700 during COVID lockdowns, providing significant mental wellness supports.
Building on this presence, CFRUC has partnered with The Crescent Arts Centre (CAC) to manage events at 525 Wardlaw. CAC was created in 2017 in order to advance the use of the building at 525 Wardlaw for community and performance arts. CAC’s mandate is to create an inclusive community hub that provides an essential home for the gatherings that feed our souls. CAC has grown rapidly into an organization which responds to community needs be they from other arts organizations, artists/performers, or from the needs of seniors, children and youth or from diversity demographic groups.
CAC assumed responsibility for Inclusion Arts in November 2021. There are four sessions, 10 weeks each, of regular programming annually = 40 weeks. Each session has four different classes running. Each class can hold 10 participants. On average there have been 8 unique individuals in each class. Thus, Inclusion Arts serves 45 unique individuals plus large networks of families and caregivers. Its annual Arts Festival has hosted up to 60 unique individuals plus 10 artists, 50 audience members and involved about 60 family members onsite in some capacity. Classes have been offered on Zoom during COVID and attendance remains the same. As of fall 2022, in-person programming is once again scheduled.
